Updated 21 April 1999

If weather prevents the Barra crossing, the race will start at Ludag Jetty

All side roads off the main road A865 are out of bounds to back-up vehicles until Gramsdale 810557. Where noted shuttles will be provided for your crew to position equipment etc and either these must be used or your crew must access transition points themselves by bike.

The "machair track" means the track up the west coast of the Uists, comprising single-and double-dotted sections and the blank areas between them. This track, including the blank areas, is suitable for cycling throughout.

There is no cutoff time on Day 1, unless in the view of the EO ascent up Eaval would be inadvisable after 1800.  Assuming that the Sound of Harris crossing is not disrupted by weather, you will in any case be spending the night on the Isle of Berneray where the Day 1 route finishes. If it is known early in the day that the Sound of Harris crossing will be cancelled, you would be best to travel with your crew on the special 2030 sailing of the ferry from Lochmaddy to Tarbert.   However, in the event that you do not finish before this ferry sails you do have the option to remain on North Uist and catch the early ferry from Otternish on Thursday morning.  This departs Otternish at 0710, arriving Leverburgh 0820. Please note, however, that if this ferry does not sail or sails late due to weather or other causes, there is no other way for you to reach Harris on Thursday.

Checkpoints are numbered according to the Team Route and some letters/numbers will therefore not be sequential
