Updated 28 April 1999.  Amendments since last update are in green

If weather prevents the Barra leg, the race will start at Ludag Jetty

Except as noted, the main road (B888/A865)  is out of bounds to active competitors on the course (except to cross it) until the junction with the B890 at 774397.  If used north of this point the A865 must be cycled

All side roads off this main road are out of bounds to back-up vehicles until the junction at Clachan na Luib 810640. The only exclusions are for the delivery/collection of canoes/canoeists for the two paddles. Active team members making changeovers at points accessed by side roads until this point must use bicycles to get to/from the changeover points and teams will probably find an extra utility bike necessary for this purpose. Failure to comply with this rule will result in a penalty code C.

The "machair track" means the track up the west coast of the Uists, comprising single-and double-dotted sections and the blank areas between them. This track, including the blank areas, is suitable for cycling throughout.

There is no cutoff time on Day 1, unless in the view of the EO ascent up Eaval would be inadvisable for teams after 1700. For suggestions on completing Day 1 if you believe you will be late, go here. In the event that the weather is so bad that cancellation of the Sound of Harris crossing is confirmed early in the day, separate provision will be made for the end of the day to enable all personnel in teams to catch the 2030 ferry.

Applies to all swimming legs:  If a team is not capable of meeting the requirements for a swimmer, then they have the option to miss out the swim legs.  In this case, the slowest actual time swum by other teams will be added to their time for the day, plus a half hour penalty for each leg.  In the event of a swimmer pulling out of a leg while in the water, the same provisions will apply as for not doing the leg at all
