| 1. Sula Sgeir | ||
| Last year's champions Sula Sgeir return this year with exactly the same team who triumphed in 1998. Gavin Earons, Shirley Hay, Graham Meeks and Murdo Campbell, all come from Lewis or Inverness, and claim they are just here to enjoy it. Don't take their modest claims too seriously however, last year they had their sights on the Veterans prize before going on to scoop the overall top spot. Despite the group having one of the older average ages at 44, they also have significant experience to draw on. With their solid navigational know-how, ideally the team say they would favour windy conditions with a heavy low mist. Whatever the weather though, one would expect Sula Sgeir to finish strongly once again this year. | ||

| The Luskentyre Lounge Lizards boast the competition's only pair of twins in Patrick and Mark Blythe, with Nick Taylor and Sue Sevege completing the line-up. Pat and Nick are both Londoners, while Mark is from Oxfordshire, but their geographic positions often forces them further afield for their training, "in a desperate search for a gradient greater than 1:20". Sue joined their team after answering a notice in a SeaKayaking newsletter, and is a mountaineering instructor based in North Wales. They are all looking forward to the race. | ||

||
| The Clangers hail from Bedfordshire and take their name from a traditional local delicacy. Canoeist Vivien Kilgour explained that "a clanger is a long suet roll with meat at one end and jam at the other, providing a main course and pudding all in one." Other members of the team include Alain Sauvage, John Shearer and Simon Fisher, who together are entering the challenge for the first time, although they have a variety of experience ranging from marathons and triathalons to iron man competitions. The team's main aim is to finish and enjoy the race, and they are looking forward to being assisted by Matthew Sandhu, aged ten, who will be helping the support team. | ||

| 26. As the Hoodie Craw Flies | ||
| As the Hoodie Craw Flies are so-called because routes in this race tend to be anything but. The team explained that they are out to prove that anyone "can throw it together at the last minute and enjoy themselves". They are not speaking empty words either, Cailean MacLeod (18), was only recruited four days ago as the result of some late reorganisation. Fortunately Cailean is not totally new to the challenge, four years ago he was the race's youngest ever competitor, taking part in the canoeing at the age of fourteen. The other members of the team are Angus Mackay, Mairi Crawford and Mairi MacCormack and they are all live locally in the Western Isles. | ||

| 28. 220 Triathlon | ||
| On paper 220 Triathalon look like a team with extremely impressive credentials. Helen Purdy is currently the UK's iron woman champion , Andy Peace is a 3 peaks fell race record holder and former UK Duathalon champ, Robin Lawrence is a member of North Bingley Harriers Championship relay team, while Jamie Carr completed the one and only Mountain Bike Race across Australia, going from coast to coast in 28 days. Even their support team boasts two ex-iron men. However, this is their first attempt at the Western Isles Challenge and much depends on how they cope without any previous experience in this unique competition. | ||

| 33. Scottish Recycling | ||
| The Scottish Recycling team from Aberdeen could well have something to say about how the race's honours are eventually divided up. Three of the members were part of the 1996 winning team, and significantly the weather conditions then were the same as now, mild and warm. Their team comprises of Malcolm Cunningham , Douglas Runcieman , Hazel Tiffney and Richard Lang, and they are certainly ones to watch. | ||
