The Ultimate Activity Holiday!
Even if you decide the event itself is not for you, or you cannot raise a team, there may be other ways you can enjoy it.
We are always on the lookout for volunteers to help out with staffing checkpoints, scrutineering, radio communications etc. There are jobs at (literally) all levels, from the roadside to the tops of mountains.

| The top of the Clisham, bad weather! |
You will be manning one or more checkpoints a day, depending on their remoteness. Duties involve checking that competitors have the right kit, timekeeping, scrutineering of the rules of the event and radio links with the checkpoints either side of you (main communications are done by the Army, but there is a backup system run by our civilian volunteers). If a competitor is lost, it is just possible that (with your agreement, of course ...) you will be asked to help with any search that is required (though this happens very rarely!)
You need to be precise and accurate with timekeeping and communications, to be able to deal with competitors who are often somewhat psyched up, and generally to be cool, calm and collected!
Full instructions are given both in general procedures and in procedures at particular checkpoints, and there is a briefing session for volunteers on the day before the event (Monday 8 May), which ideally you should be able to attend
Volunteers will receive their ferry fares from the mainland as foot passengers, and be provided with transport around the islands and accommodation (which will usually be in a B&B, but may be a hostel or even a tent depending on the checkpoints to be manned). We do, however, need a commitment to cover the full three days if these costs are to be paid

Apart from the fun of participating in the event, and seeing other people doing a lot of hard work, your only other recompense will be any freebies provided by our sponsors, a Challenge T-Shirt, free drinks nightly at the Race HQ and free food and drinks at what is generally a roaring final ceilidh!
